‘Indo-Surinamese girl’
"Indo-Surinamese girl standing in the middle of a rice field in Nickerie, Suriname," by Nazrina Rodjan
Nazrina Rodjan is a visual artist who works in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. As Nazrina’s an Indo-Surinamese queer woman living in the Netherlands, she has always been drawn to the untold stories of marginalized communities.
From a young age she yearned to tell stories through visual storytelling. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from The Academy of Fine Art and Design, St. Joost in 2016. In graduation school, she decided to mix her passion for visual medium with personal understanding of the inherent complexity of identities. She successfully pursued her graduation topic on Indo-Surinamese perspectives of Dutch colonization and the history of indentured workers.
She has since used her varied skills in mediums of illustration, animation and theater to increase queer and Indo-Caribbean visibility and representation. Her use of visual art and storytelling allows her to authentically depict the lived experiences of people whose voices have long been silenced or ignored.
By actively engaging with these narratives, she challenges and disrupts the boundaries of dominant narratives.
