India to Réunion Island

Photograph taken at the home of the Valeama family in St. Louis. Recruiters went to Madagascar first, but also Asia (China, Indonesia), Africa (Angola, Mozambique, Gorée) and South India. The majority of indentured labourers to Réunion were mainly recruited from Tamil Nadu (Pondicherry, Yanam, Madras) and secondarily in Bengal (Calcutta). They were from lower caste communities.
